Claustrophobia
Treating claustrophobia
I’m travelling to work on the underground for the first time in years. – Mr B, Islington
Hypnotherapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Before we treat your claustrophobia, we take the time to understand the history, underlying causes and nature of your phobia. This pre-treatment assessment helps us determine a course of treatment for you.
Following your initial assessment, we treat your claustrophobia with 6 therapy sessions (typically) each lasting 1 hour. Therapy includes exposure management, relaxation training, challenging distorted thoughts and coping with stress.
Why is CBT and hypnotherapy successful at treating claustrophobia?
Combined hypnotherapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, known as cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy is a powerful, multi-faceted treatment for claustrophobia.
The CBT element of treatment helps you recognise that your thoughts are irrational and that your thoughts directly affect your emotions, behaviours and physical symptoms.
Clinical Hypnotherapy eliminates your subconscious fears around enclosed spaces. Controlled exposure also helps you to recognise and tolerate anxiety, and gradually reduces its effects.
