Hypnosis has no single agreed definition. A generally held view, however, (put forward by the American Society of Pyschological Hypnosis in 1993) is that ‘Hypnosis is a procedure during which a health professional suggests that a patient experiences changes in sensations, perceptions, thoughts or behaviour’
This broad definition acknowledges the role of the clinical hypnotherapist, the context in which hypnotherapy is conducted, and the role of the patient experiencing hypnosis. However, a fundamental concept of all analytically based therapeutic models is that some specially potent experiences whether brief and traumatic repetitive, or continuous and painful are repressed, blocked from consciousness and that repressed ‘complexes’ exert a determining influence on mood, behaviour, perception and relationships into and through adult life.
The alliance between patient and therapist develops through shared work. The work of therapy is very much a collaborative commitment. It is a relationship based on mutual trust in which both patient and therapist commit themselves to the task of recovery. This is the fundamental protocol of the Apex Practice.
