Hypnotherapy and CBT for panic attacks

Before we treat your panic attacks we need to discover the underlying causes. Your recovery begins with a pre-treatment assessment, during which we explore the history, social factors and beliefs that underpin your panic attacks.

Following this assessment we will determine a course of treatment. This typically requires 6 therapy sessions. Therapy focuses on exposure management, relaxation training, challenging distorted thoughts and coping with stress.

Why are CBT and hypnotherapy successful at treating panic attacks?

The Apex Practice will treat you with a powerful combination of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and clinical hypnotherapy, known as Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy.

CBT encourages you to recognise that some of your thoughts are irrational, and that your thoughts directly influence your emotions, behaviours and physical symptoms.

Hypnotherapy addresses your subconscious anxieties. Additionally, controlled exposure to the primary anxiety helps to deflate the fear and allows you to learn that anxiety can be controlled.

About panic attacks

Panic attacks consist of a frightening set of physical symptoms that may include heart palpitations, sweating, trembling, shortness of breath, nausea and a fear of losing control. Panic attacks have a sudden onset and seldom last more than 30 minutes.

Various factors can influence panic attacks such as travelling away from home, travelling in public transport, using lifts or escalators, confronting unusual or strange situations. Panic attacks can also occur at home.

The first panic attack is often identified with a stressful life event such as starting a new job, moving home, divorce, childbirth or relationship conflict.
