Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Treatment with CBT and EMDR

The Apex Practice offers Cognitive Behavioural Therapies, EMDR Therapies and counselling services from fully trained therapists to help you overcome post traumatic stress disorder.

Before we commence your Post Traumatic Stress Disorder treatment we need to have a full understanding of your symptoms. Your recovery begins with a pre-treatment assessment, during which we evaluate the history, original trauma, social factors, family dysfunctionality and any other factors that have maintained or influenced your post traumatic stress disorder.

Your Post Traumatic Stress Disorder treatment programme will consist of typically 8 weekly post traumatic stress disorder treatment sessions each lasting one hour. Your post traumatic stress disorder treatment will include a combination of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprogramming) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

EMDR is an integrated therapy comprising an 8 phase treatment that includes the use of eye movement stimulation. EMDR helps trauma survivors reprocess disturbed thoughts and memories.

WHY IS CBT AND EMDR SUCCESSFUL IN POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER TREATMENT?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and EMDR treat the trauma on a multilevel basis supported by a strong therapeutic and counselling alliance between you and your Cognitive Behavioural Therapist. In addition, controlled exposure to the primary anxiety will assist in bringing about behavioural change that will prevent further relapse.

About Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) frequently arises following a traumatic event beyond the range of ‘normal’ human experience, and usually involves the threat to, or loss of life, e.g. road traffic accidents, personal assault, rape, exposure to and/or witnessing a disaster.

PTSD is symptomatic with a persistent re-experience of the trauma in the form of nightmares, flashbacks and intrusive memories. Other features are depressed mood, stress, anxiety, insomnia, poor concentration, hypervigilance and avoidant behaviour.
