Addictions
At the Apex Practice, we recognise the sensitive nature of this problem and we treat you in the utmost confidence in a caring, sympathetic environment.
Certain difficulties which may result from how one sees oneself and the effect on behaviour as a consequence may lead to addictive behaviour. As a result of this perception, perhaps some minor, common and persistent response pattern may be established which is unacceptable to the individual and society and indicates a need for treatment.
The main features of an addiction are as follows:
- Psychological dependency i.e. there is an emotional need for the drug which decreases feelings of tension and other unpleasant symptoms.
- Physical dependency i.e. there are certain physiological changes which take place as a result of drug dependency. Withdrawal symptoms can also be experienced as the effect of the drug wears off.
In all cases of addiction whatever the drug, it is essential that a comprehensive approach to treatment is applied. Any or all of the following measures may have to be adopted.
- Removal from the drug culture environment
- Embrace other social services, i.e. health visitors, social workers, alcoholics anonymous etc.
- Treatment of the physical condition.
- Treatment of the psychological condition i.e. depression, anger, stress.
- Other therapy e.g. drug replacement.
